Key information
Record-high markets can give an incomplete picture of investment performance. Looking beyond headline figures can help you understand the wider market and identify opportunities. Key considerations include:
- A small number of companies can have a significant influence on overall returns
- Performance can vary considerably between sectors and businesses
- Strong growth in some areas can mask weaker performance elsewhere
- Diversification can reduce reliance on individual areas of the market
- A long-term investment approach can help navigate changing market conditions
Given everything that’s happened over the past few years, from inflation and rising interest rates to geopolitical tensions, that may come as a surprise.
But perhaps the bigger surprise is what those headline numbers don’t tell us.
When we hear that ‘the market’ has reached a record high, it’s easy to imagine thousands of companies marching higher together. In reality, that isn’t always the case.
Recent market gains have been heavily influenced by a relatively small number of businesses, many linked to the growth of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, a large number of other companies have experienced a much more challenging period. It’s a useful reminder that markets are rarely one story.
What’s happening under the surface are businesses operating in different industries, facing different challenges and benefiting from different opportunities. Some are growing rapidly. Others are adjusting to higher borrowing costs, changing consumer behaviour or increased competition.
We’ve seen this before.
Throughout investment history there have been moments when a particular theme captures investors’ attention. Railways, oil, the internet and now artificial intelligence have all dominated market conversations at different times.
That doesn’t mean the enthusiasm is misplaced. Many of these innovations have gone on to transform industries and create enormous value. But it does remind us that market headlines often focus on the biggest winners while overlooking the broader picture. And that broader picture matters.
Strong headline market performance can sometimes mask a much wider range of experiences beneath the surface. Understanding what’s driving returns, and where those returns are coming from, can often be more revealing than the headline number itself.
Whether the companies attracting the most attention today will still be leading the conversation in five or ten years’ time remains to be seen. What is clear is that investment stories are rarely as straightforward as they first appear. And perhaps that’s why record highs don’t always feel quite as impressive as the headlines suggest. That’s one reason why many investors value experienced guidance. It’s not about having all the answers or predicting what happens next. It’s about understanding what’s driving the headlines and keeping sight of the bigger picture when the story isn’t always as straightforward as it first appears.

What this means for you as a Nedbank Private Wealth client
Record-high markets can make it difficult to see where the risks and opportunities really lie. Headline returns may not reflect performance across individual companies and sectors, making diversification and a long-term perspective particularly important. Professional investment advice can help you look beyond short-term market trends and maintain a portfolio aligned with your long-term financial goals.
