Tax Specialist

We are looking for a Tax Specialist to join us as a key part of our team. This is the ideal role for someone who has an analytical mindset and a strong attention to detail. You will need previous experience and excellent technical knowledge to be our subject matter expert in a busy Finance team. 

The Tax Specialist is responsible for ensuring that NPWI complies with all regulations that affect its taxation obligations in the jurisdictions where it carries on business. A key purpose of the role is to ensure that NPWI executes and adheres to the Nedbank Level 1 Tax Policy (as reviewed annually).  You should have in-depth experience with either the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), OECD Common Reporting Standards (CRS) or  US Qualified Intermediary (IQ), and an understanding of the others.

Role specific details

The role holder will ensure compliance by NPWI with all taxation and tax reporting obligations to Revenue Authorities world-wide, including, but not limited to:

• Corporate Income Taxes (including Capital Gains Tax where relevant);
• Indirect Taxes (including Value Added Tax, Goods and Services taxes etc);
• Payroll Taxes (including those taxes paid by employers and employees);
• All Withholding Taxes;
• Returns and payments for other operational taxes administered by Revenue Authorities;
• Returns for client and other third-party reporting requirements (including tax certificates, as required by the applicable Tax Regulations, transfer pricing documentation requirements and country-by-country reporting, FATCA reporting, OECD (CRS) reporting, Qualified Intermediary reporting, Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) reporting, other reportable arrangements and third-party taxation agent appointments and information requests).

The Key responsibility of the Tax Specialist is to ensure that NPWI operates in line with the Nedbank Group commitments to:

• Be a responsible taxpayer, based on professionally executed tax compliance and tax planning which is based on valid business purposes and endeavours to comply with all tax legislation that may affect its tax obligations in all jurisdictions where it carries on business;
• Maintain an open, honest and positive working relationship with the Revenue Authorities and industry bodies in all jurisdictions where it carries on business;
• Have adequate disclosure and transparency of all tax matters. There may be areas of differing legal interpretation between the Group and Revenue Authorities and, where this occurs, the Group will engage proactively with internal stakeholders and external counsel in order to resolve any issues as soon as possible;
• Develop highly qualified tax professionals whilst taking advice from reputable professional firms when appropriate;
• Manage its tax affairs in an efficient, effective and transparent manner;
• Manage tax risks within the risk appetite guidelines of the Group; and
• Ensure that the reputation of the Group is not damaged, because of unintentional tax law breaches.

To fulfil the key responsibility the Head of Taxation will:

• “Horizon scan”, continually monitoring the potential impact of new tax legislation;
• Maintain the corporate timetable of tax reporting and payment, reviewing tax reports prepared by the business prior to submission to the relevant authorities;
• Provide advice, support and training to NPWI operational teams with regards to taxation matters that arise in the ordinary course of business;
• Independently investigate and act on matters relating to tax compliance;
• Handle tax administration related queries; and
• Update procedures in line with changes to international tax compliance.

Qualifications

• Member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.

Technical Skills and Experience

• Proven taxation professional with five years' post-qualification experience working within a busy taxation team involved in the tax affairs of an international financial services organisation. 
• A sound knowledge of Isle of Man, UK and Channel Islands financial services taxation is a requirement
• Broader international taxation experience would be desirable, as would multi-jurisdictional experience in some or all of the locations NPWL operates in
